Monitor screen resolution set too high

I got a call today from a client who was having an issue with monitor screen resolution. His main expensive large screen TFT monitor had failed. He had replaced it with a smaller monitor which he had sitting around, just to enable him to check his emails. However after the initial PC boot the monitor went black with an error message saying that the  screen resolution was set too high.  The solution…

Boot the PC into a basic video screen mode by continually tapping the f8 key as the PC starts up and selecting “Safe mode”.  Once the desktop has displayed in this low resolution form it is easy to go into control panel  / Display and set the PC display resolution to a mid value such at 1024 *1080. Save this resolution and reboot the PC into normal mode.

You should now be able to see the screen and can make any further adjustment for the new monitor as required.
